September 10, 2024 – Peterborough– The Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) is pleased to announce that Orillia Power Generation Corporation will host public tours of its Fenelon Falls Generating Station as part of the Kawartha Lakes Doors Open event. Tours of this facility are free to the public and will take place on September 15th, 2024, at 10 am, 11 am, and 1 pm. Registration is required. More details can be found here.
“Featuring waterpower in the Doors Open Ontario campaign is a natural fit,” said Paul Norris, President of the OWA. “Many Ontario communities were built around waterways and waterpower was our first source of electricity. These events provide the public with a unique opportunity to have a sneak peek inside some historic gems.”
Orillia Power owns and operates six waterpower generating stations. On September 15, they will open the doors of the Fenelon Falls Generating Station, located at Lock 34 of the Trent-Severn Waterway in the village of Fenelon Falls, Ontario. Fenelon Falls’ earliest generating station was built in 1893 by the Fenelon Falls Electric Light Company and first powered five electric streetlights. Rebuilt in 1997, the current 2.6 MW waterpower station supplies electricity to up to 2,000 homes in Kawartha Lakes.
There are 224 waterpower facilities in the province, supplying one-quarter (1/4) of Ontario’s electricity requirements. More than three dozen of these facilities have been in continuous operation for over a century, moderating electricity prices for ratepayers. Recent estimates indicate that 4000-5000 MW of new waterpower could be developed in the province – an increase of 50%.
