R.H. Saunders Generating Station Celebrates 60 Years

Pre-Registered Tours June 23

Cornwall – Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is celebrating 60 years of generating clean, renewable hydro-electricity along the St. Lawrence River at the R.H. Saunders Generating Station (GS).

“We’re proud to be stewards of a number of water powered stations with rich and long histories, like the R.H. Saunders Generating Station,” said Mike Martelli, President, Renewable Generation and Power Marketing. “On July 1, 1958, the station opened for business with the push of a button and the explosion of a cofferdam four kilometres upstream of the powerhouse. Sixty years later, the R.H. Saunders Generating Station continues to be a vital source of clean renewable electricity and a symbol of international cooperation.”

On Saturday, June 23, OPG is hosting pre-registered guided tours for members of the public. Visitors will get an up-close look at a generator, chat with our staff, and enjoy the spectacular view from the sixth floor observation deck.

To participate in a tour, please register by emailing the St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre at powervisitorcentre@opg.com, or by calling (613) 932-4563. Tours will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. To ensure a safe tour, it is mandatory for all guests to wear flat, closed-toe shoes. Tour space is limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

OPG generates safe, clean, reliable, low cost power for Ontario. More than 99 per cent of this power is free of smog and greenhouse gas emissions. OPG’s power is priced 40 per cent lower than other generators, which helps moderate customer bills.
