SUMMARY:OWA Member-Only Workshop: Building Partnerships - Expanding Waterpower with Indigenous Communities
DESCRIPTION:The Ontario Waterpower Association is thrilled to once again partner with Indigenous & Community Engagement Inc. (ICE) to host a full-day\, member-only industry capacity building workshop\, scheduled for Friday\, April 10\, in Toronto\, ON. Contact hmcfadden@owa.ca to register. \nWhy Now? \nOntario’s electricity system is undergoing a seismic shift\, underpinned by the province’s first Integrated Energy Plan – Energy For Generations – and the expansion of reliable “Made in Ontario” waterpower can both drive economic growth and advance economic reconciliation through Indigenous equity partnerships in energy projects. In addition to the leadership of Indigenous communities in the Moose River Basin\, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is preparing to launch a hydro-specific competitive procurement anticipated in the spring 2026\, targeting up to 1 TWh (~200+ MW) of new generation. \nThe success of these new investments will depend on the establishment and growth of business relationships with Indigenous Communities in whose traditional territory these opportunities exist. \nParticipants will gain a practical understanding of: \n\nIndigenous rights\, title\, and governance context relevant to hydro development in Ontario;\nOverview of Indigenous equity partnership models used in energy infrastructure;\nDistinction between consultation\, engagement\, benefits\, and equity participation;\nWhat Indigenous Nations typically look for in equity partnerships;\nCommon pitfalls and risk areas for proponents; and\nAlignment with procurement expectations and evaluation considerations.\n\nWho should Attend? \nAny and all OWA members expecting to be involved in the expansion of waterpower in Ontario should participate – regardless of your role in project development\, the engagement of and partnership with Indigenous Communities will be part of ensuring success.
