The Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) is joining in the celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary with a series of tours of historic hydroelectric facilities across the province. Support for the events is being provided by Ontario 150 Community Celebration Program led by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.
Waterpower facilities are distributed across the province and have been providing renewable, affordable and reliable energy to the Ontario electricity grid since the late 1800’s. Of the 215 waterpower facilities in Ontario, thirty-five (35) have been in operation for 100 years or more (see map below). Today, Ontario’s waterpower resources comprise about a quarter of the province’s electricity supply and 90% of Ontario’s renewable energy, with an installed capacity of almost 9,000MW.
“This initiative provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate Ontario’s rich waterpower history and its bright future,” said Stephanie Landers, Communications and Public Relations Advisor at the OWA. “Waterpower was Ontario’s first source of electricity and continues to fuel sustainable economic growth in the province.” The OWA will be supporting five member tours of hydroelectric facilities and promoting a Celebration of Ontario’s Energy History and Future. Facility tours will launch in June 2017. Details are provided below.
